The article on the bicycle brake conspiracy has been removed by the wikipedia administrators, who are part of the conspiracy. The other sources toil away in obscurity, hounded by agents of an overweilding federal government, doomed to live a life of repression and dissent... only in their hearts and secret underground meetings knowing the righteousness of their cause.
By: brusselmkg. on 20 May 08, 19:51:08
Oops sorry, phdecora. But I must say your statements sound both unusual, and not very well founded. Could you try and find the Wikipedia article you referred to ? Other sources ? The Wikipedia article Fixed-gear_bicycle has a section on (missing)brakes that lacks the arguments you put forward, although the debate on brakeless "fixies" is coverred. . Instead referenced arguments are put forward vaguely to the opposite effect.

As we all know, the evils of groupthink and the common, uncritical mind, are responsible for the greatest tragedies in human history... including the Great Leap Forward, Fascism, and bicycle helmets. It is like Atlas Shrugged come to life. Helmets be damned, so that America, and Freedom, might live.
By: phdecora. on 20 May 08, 19:19:42
i do not know to what you refer, sir. i am merely pointing out that the same control freak, nanny state social thrust that is responsible for the bicycle helmet fad is also responsible for the brake fad. Men got along fine for decades without the modern braking systems, and all their complicated skullduggery, marketing hype, and government propaganda.

phecora: You are trying to paint opinions that you do not agree with as ridiculous. Not very compliant with the method of reasoning and study to find out about things. I did not say the specific Wikipedia article provides proof. It provides pointers to scientific literature and reasoning. A good starting point. Besides I gave other pointers as well. Can you or anyone else point to better overviews of the arguments and the science ?
By: phdecora. on 20 May 08, 12:50:28
i agree. i dont have brakes on my bike either, some arrticle on wikipedia showed me this study of countries that force you to have brakes.... it made no difference in safety, and people stopped riding as much.

What if you get doored? It's probably the most common accident and they don't even mention it. Make sure you get the driver's name and license plate number if you get in an accident!

My friend Joe had a collision with another bicyclists he was transported to a hospital out cold he had no health insurance. Joe now rides with a helmet he was in high school at the time working at a chicken shack and couldn't afford the $800 ambulance bill it was that cheap back in the mid 80's and who knew what the hospital bill was. I learned from Joe I ride with a helmet, reflectors, blinkies, headlamp,on me and the bike, you name I try to be seen. All LED lights they last longer.

Cranro: yeah, maybe you're a lot safer from accidents when you ride according to the rules of the road but if you have an accident you'll be a lot more likely to be screwed without a helmet
By: cranro. on 09 Mar 08, 11:18:17
If you ride properly according to the rules of the road then your no more likely to get a head injury than a pedestrian. I don't walk with a helmet so i dont ride with one.

Poor chanrobi. He has obviously not been riding long enough to know that a helmet can save a noggin. He is angry and frustrated. But he has discovered that sharing his brand of ignorance online while living under a rock and gives him a great deal of satifisfaction and eases his frustration. =)
