Exactly my point.

That's 100% true. I am majoring in engineering right now and looking into the nuclear field, and I quickly found out how many people that oppose nuclear power know very little, if anything about it. They just hear the word "nuclear" and think of bombs and Hiroshima and stuff like thatand then equate it to bad, which is ignorant. I rarely talk to or read about someone who opposes nuclear power that actually knows much about it. Some do, but the majority do not.

CRAP i'm debating this topic on saturday but my partner forced me into debating against nuclear energy so now i have to write the opening statement when there are sooo many things pointing against it :[ plus I dont even agree with the con side.

Nuclear is A LOT cleaner then oil. Reprocessing spent fuel like the French; (and yeah I don't like them) but what the have works and the reprocessed fuel come out with a higher yield from that of which it when in. Granted I'm not sure if you can indefinitely reprocess fuel. Anyone know?

Whats us technology? War? yea...war....
By: Stefnir94. on 03 Oct 08, 07:50:55
Most people who are against nuclear energy don't know much about nuclear energy.
By: 3milesmile. on 03 Oct 08, 01:02:40
The technology isn't there for solar/wind. Nuclear IS clean and new plants are being considered now. They make a lot of money and create many high paying careers. They have minimal enviro impact. Yucca mount needs to open to store the used fuel in 1 remote location. Coal plants are destroying the air. They should be replaced.

Nuclear Power may just decide this election. Good thing for the Dems that Edwards didn't get the nomination.
By: quecuentas3. on 27 Sep 08, 04:09:15
i really believe offshore drilling would just slow down the development of new solutions to the problem. difercification of developments in eolic and nuclear power could actually work, but needs the interest of the public to take off.
By: quecuentas3. on 27 Sep 08, 04:04:42
no man nuclear is clean, depending in which reactors are used. many institutions are developing hidrogen reactors. but they are safe most of accidents occured in nuclear plants are because of faulty development and lack of safety. USA already uses nuclear and if it wanted to invest more it would be the nation leading the way in nuclear development
By: bjvraider22. on 25 Sep 08, 17:40:08
and i hope shawn dies of nuclear poisoning too
By: FailToLive. on 25 Sep 08, 07:35:33
Yeah, and if you look at the tower looking things you see, all thats coming out of them is steam which is just water vapor. Is that not good for the enviroment.
By: Mources. on 23 Sep 08, 12:50:04
Much cleaner than a lot of energy resources. And it hardly turns people into mutants. it's just the waste, and the danger of accidents etc
By: chanel6548. on 22 Sep 08, 19:35:59
WTF!!! this shawn guy is a fucking idiot how the hell is nuclear safe and clean!? it turns people in to mutants, hes a fucking retard thats what he is! hope he dies! >:(

Nuclear power has become prohibitively expensive due to the skyrocketing Capital Expense costs. And you are spot on with the costs related to launching nuclear waste into space. Besides it's recklessly stupid.
By: microfactory. on 20 Sep 08, 15:38:25
Actually its more like 40% nuclear (from 5 plants) and about 55% hydro. The rest is mainly from waste recycling. Since Switzerland has no nuclear corporations or uranium mines and obviously has no problem to store renewable electricity with its hydro power plants there's definitely no reason for Switzerland to invest in new nuclear power plants. Switzerland should invest in new Technologies with high growth and not in nuclear which loses market share worldwide.
By: microfactory. on 20 Sep 08, 15:31:39
Needless to say that launching nuclear waste in space would make nuclear power prohibitively expensive. (After all: Nuclear power is not the only option to produce electricity.)
By: 93383lt1. on 20 Sep 08, 03:57:05
Nuclear power by no means is safe (Proof? or just pontificating). Just look at what deregulation has brought to the banking and insurance industry (Nuclear Power is Regulated by the NRC and always will be). There is no complete solution to the waste problem (Yucca Mt project). I don't think there ever will be since it's been studied for the last 55 years(50% credit if you bothered to research it for yourself rather than listen to the talking heads on TV you might know something).

Wind farms can be geographically diverse and take advantage of the grid. Wind quits blowing in one area is covered by other areas. Wind can work well hand in hand with energy storage methods (hydro-kinetic, compressed air, vanadium reflux, hydrogen...) and natural gas to make up for time the wind blows insufficiently. Launching nuclear waste into space could be interpreted as prohibited by the 1967 Outer Space Treaty, Articles IV and IX. A launch failure is suicidal for the whole planet.
By: milofonbil. on 19 Sep 08, 12:11:24
My response "why bother" was to tastysalad above. c06031983's math is wrong for the Capital Costs for wind (using his #'s): 97,400 MW / (1.5 MW * 0.4) = 162,333 turbines [0.4 is the capacity factor for wind turbines] 162,333 * 1.5 million ea = $243.5 Billion But they are still much cheaper than the Capital Costs for nuclear: 97,400 MW / (1,000 MW * 0.9) = 108.222 nuke plants [0.9 is the capacity factor for a nuke] 108 * 12 Billion = $1.3 Trillion Wind is much cheaper than nuclear power
