doju is right, they are extremely complicated! A simple way to understand them is by understanding the underlying principle: share the wealth and spread the risk. Derivatives are only complicated because they have involved so many entities in each item that it becomes mind boggling. The bottom line is that they are products that take some sort of security and repackage it into different products that get more money involved and cover more backsides from losing in case of default.
