The most important thing if you want to use blender or any other program like it is RAM and CPU when making everything, you can always render over night or while you have dinner if it takes long and clips takes forever to render, but if it lags when using, it's hopeless.

Sure, it was: OpenGL Performance Programming by Eskil Steenberg, Blender Conference 2006 - Day 1. 49 mins. Initally, he illustrate how use shaders to render many kind of complex materials hand behavior, but then he goes on OpenGL specific performances tips. Of course, these features are used generally for real-time rendering, but the point is that this isn't "a must": rendering power is there and *should* be used, no matter for what.

Actually, thinking about rendering without a good card is possible, but just unreal, because new software renderer DO USE CARD's features as well. There is a developers video on GoogleVideo talking how to improve render times in Blender3D using the GPU and not only the CPU... Today ALL the computing power is (should be) used also for offline renderings, so yes, to have decent rendering time, a good video card is pref.

I found the video very interesting, but it moved much too fast and cutting in every few minutes with unpleasant snippets of comparison made it feel too moralistic and preachy. I think several longer installments would have been better, and cutting the morals down to one per installment would have given the veiwer time to absorb the points, rather than feeling run over by them. If you don't give people time to accept the facts, they tend to turn defensive.

I think this video is an example of how fast frames move nowadays. A few years ago I could walk into a pub with a few TVs and could tell if they were on the same channel. NOWaways, I look like a rooster looking at the TVs in the same place; it's rare the frame is on the same visual during the time it takes to turn your head. Yeah, the video is nice and all (CGI pretty cool), but I don't think it's entirely accurate. After all, if something THAT big hit the earth at ANY respectable speed (like, faster than a moving car :P), then the planet would be rendered pretty much unrecognizable as a planet. That means either being split into pieces, smashed apart and reforming, maybe turning into goo and making another moon... Any of these are possibilities. The point is that that "meteor" has just too much mass to NOT do this.

it's a perfectly reasonable question. The control surfaces (i.e. flaps, ailerons, elevators and rudder) are all controlled by hydraulic fluid. Hydraulic fluid lines meet in the tail near the rear bulkhead. During the flight the panels around this bulkhead tore apart severing those pipes. Without hydraulics the aircraft is un-maneuverable and totally uncontrollable. It is like trying to steer a car and nothing happening when you turn the wheel. This was due to improper maintenance by the Airline.

for that tree/airbus collision: The onboard computer wont let the pilots pull back enough to cause a stall. The computer kept it out of stall which would have caused it to dip a wing or some other nasty thing as it hit the trees. Lives were saved due to the lack of stall. (not that hitting trees is fun either way lol) I remember seeing that video a few years ago and asked my A330 pilot neighbor about it. Thats where I got this info.

I'd really say that the bigger threat would be from NEOs rather than oort loud objects (the oort cloud is still hypothetical, mind you, though it almost 100% for sure DOES exist). Oort cloud objects might be scarier, there are many many more NEOs that pose a much greater threat than an oort cloud object. It was an asteroid that destroyed the dinosaurs (they've pinpointed the origin of the KT asteroid as a fragment of a larger asteroid which is still there).
