man, that just looks like a smooth ride, unbeleivable. Did you know that if you make a scale model of a space shuttle, it will always do a roll program because off the shuttle's set up and center of gravity where the shuttle is top heavy and its initial acceleration fights against the earth's gravity causing the shuttle to curve upwards at first. and because the shuttle is not at orbital speed yet the shuttle initially topples over. Amazing.

Living not far from KSC... I see the rockets and shuttles going up from my front yard... never a boring thing to watch... I only 'imagine' what it is like for them... awesome no doubt. Was on the Shuttle Launch Experience at KSC recently. Though it is NO WHERE near the real thing... it is the next best thing of what they go through... astronauts help design this... I agree... great with no commentary...

Low temperature caused the failure of an o-ring wich is on the srb. The flame that leaked out burned a hole in the external tank wich ignited the liquid o2. The crew actually survived the explosion. The crew "capsule" reached an altitude to about 70 000 feet. NASA belives that the crew passed out because of the high altitude. but they were alive until they hit the water. Dont worry. NASA has learned form its mistakes.

No the astronauts were actually conscious for a short while during the disintegration. Not sure how long exactly but they had used their emergency compressed air and at least knew something was going wrong.

I don't think it has anything to do with the pumps, if the sound is real (and part of the rocket rumble here is most likely overdubbed), it could be air flow whistling on the aerodynamic shape of the orbiter as it picks up speed and eventually crosses Mach 1.

They do put up checklists on the windscreens. They dont need to see where they are going because the launch programme is all computer controlled. They have so many checks to perform before / during launch they stick the checklists there to keep the computer / controls clear. I heard this when I was as Kennedy Space Centre.

The two things above the top two digital readouts? - they have writing on. I think the wind shields are glaring from the sun or earth's reflection off the nose. It's a cheap video camera but it seems exposed for the ambient cockpit light, hence anything brighter just gets over exposed.

Yup, mdonovan, better design. Better thermal tiles. More powerful liquid fuel rocket launch system meaning no need for dangerous solid rocket boosters like what blew up Challenger or extra weight-adding rockets on the shuttle itself. Higher cargo payload. And the US Shuttle can't even be piloted automatically. Unfortunately for Buran, their government couldn't afford to waste money like ours because Communism made for a weaker economy with less ability to fund stuff like this.

@standauffish: It is just a question of common sense. Engines or not: you don't get 100 tons or even 200 tons of cargo in a shuttle as large as a Buran or the Space Shuttle. The Buran with its 30 tons has already a significantly larger amount of payload than the shuttle. I would like to see a source which originates, that NASA thought about the Buran as a vehicle to go to mars. You are quite aware that is a bit different to build a orbiter or a deep space vehicle?

It would help greatly if you actually did some research other than Wikipedia that ANYONE can edit as they see fit... The Buran does not have main engines like the shuttle... so it has both the extra space and the lack of these main engines makes it lighter thus able to carry more cargo.. The lift is provided by the Energia rocket which is beyond a doubt more powerful than anything the American currently have and even NASA has considered it for a Mars launch

Even during the tragedy of Columbia's re-entry, she tried her best to save her crew, despite her left wing collapsing, firing her thrusters on full to try and stay level, before being dragged over and destroyed.

One thing confuses me (and not being one of these conspiracy nuts foreign intelligence propagandists) I do remember a program some years back that suggested Columbia was bought down by recently observed phenomena called sprites, elves, and blue jets. STS-115 Space Shuttle Atlantis blasts off from Kennedy Space Center Florida. Near the end of the clip you can see the vapor cloud as the shuttle breaks the sound barrier. This was shot by a good friend of mine, he was kind enough to get me that close to the pad, then run the camera as I watched.

But when you reach a certain altitude you have no atmosphere to get any lift, and then you should activate the rockets you´re talking about. Truste me, it ain´t easy man. Whats the latest on this attempt. Will they try again. The 1st attempt was amzingly stable and controlled. Shame the RRRST (resusable Robin Reliant space Shuttle Transporter)could not seperate as planned. You could see the RC sytem was working all the way to the ground. The "pilot" did a good job controlling the craft into a safe area away from personel. My only question is where was the landing Strip??
