I don't remember ever agreeing with something more, & I mean that, I'm not just saying it. Yep, I'm afraid I gotta agree with all the folks hating on the stutter-effect... that haunting ethereal smoothness is one of the most defining features of her voice! It's like taking the recipe for the sweetest cake imaginable and substituting the sugar with salt. The slideshow was really nice however!

I tried to be open-minded about this, but the memories I have attached to the originial song are too strong... I'm a big dance fan, but hearing Lisa Gerrard's voice with a stutter effect is painful. Not painful to my ears, mind you, as I'm sure those who are not familiar with the original song may enjoy this, but painful to my heart. As others have said: The mood is not the same. But I don't think you could dance if it were. The conservative in me is hurt and the liberal is unimpressed.

I'm a dance music fan and Lisa Gerrard fan. The first 1:44 seconds I like. The rest shows that Oakie knew he'd stumbled upon a sublime sound...but he didn't know what to do with it. So this is the bastard spawn of her angelic voice and his cheesy trance. Stuff like this gives dance/trance a bad name. Shame really. If Sasha sampled her vocals something truly great could be produced I'm sure.

I beg to differ. Renee's voice is truly clear and precise from her lower register to her higher register as well. I've only heard one other person sing this aria besides Fleming I know named Jessica Abel. She sang this our 10th grade year, and it was close to perfect. Of course Dame Sutherland sounded good, but you have to give credit where it is due, and you guys know she sang this well. Her embellishments , were clean and crisp, and she made the song sound easy. Come on guys, this time listen.

Sorry I disagree. Sutherland has issues on this - her choice of where to take a breath during the long runs (right after the first consonant you will notice a large gasp) and there are several instances of her miscueing on the meter. I wouldn't have wanted to be the trumpeter trying to figure out what she was doing. That being said, her coloratura ornamentation at the end is stunning, but I don't think enough to salvage the breathing issues. I still say K. Battle is the best on this song.

it's amazing such a powerful voice could be so agile. but she's so powerful it almost makes the piece too serious. She does a lovely job, but her beautiful dark color (for a coloratura at least) is ment to be strong and riveting as opposed to the light, sweet, and almost playful sound that sounds best for this piece. Still, it's a great interpretation in it's own right.

There is a live performance of this and the high D at the end is very dark with an almost brazen ring. I mean really like Callas but without the wobble, the vibrato is perfect. As it is, for a lyric soprano, this piece is not that difficult, if not for the intricate fioritura. The overall tessitura is friendly to a lyric voice but not at all to a dramatic soprano. Then we add the coloratura and any other dramatic soprano who attempts this hellish piece will probably end up spitting out one of her lungs. This is way high for your typical dramatic soprano but listen to what Dame Joan does to this.

Actually, most of that was coming from the camera people. They are trying to get the actor's attention so that they can get the best shot of him. There's a trick getting the attention of a "star" - catch them of guard in a humourous fashion (like the lady with the Matador shot - smart lady).
