Following up the comments on the lightness of the keys, these need to be reasonably "heavy". I have an old Bechstein Model A and, as is typical for an old piano, the keys are excessively light. This is not a good thing.

Richter is the master... Argerich was a child prodigy, but I wouldnt say she was better than Richter. Horowitz is beyond my knowledge. Some people seem to understand his music, while I dont, at least yet. You cannot say anyone is better than Richter.

You just put words into my mouth right there,because when i first watched this video about 8 months ago,i thought this was a genuine video which wasn't sped up.I even argued my case saying how great Richter was as a pianist. But when I stumbled accross this video again i noticed this link /watch?v=cjZMVKb1vSE posted by another viewer, where he clearly is playing the piece at a slower tempo than seen here in the same clip.Richter plays this piece incredibley,the best in the world i think.

We can do it in the 21st century, but not in the 60s. This is purely him having fun. Plus, his movements are all real. If they were sped up, he would look super jerky. In this vid he just looks like hes playing "con fuoco".

I dunno about the debate about who's better. To be honest, I kinda suspect whether Richter really 'wants' to play it this fast - his studio recordings (and even some live ones) are all much more 'reasonably' tempoed. I think this is just him having fun, haha. He's kinda badass.

Completed in October 2006, the video for Max Richter's track 'Song', which appears on his album, 'Songs From Before', was shot by film maker Yulia Mahr in a remote part of the Pyrenees. Using out-of-date Super-8mm black and white film stock, and some of the last Kodachrome 40 stock ever produced, it is a neat vsual accompaniment to the grain and atmosphere of Max's music.

People saying that he "played it too fast" don't know what they're talking about. Nobody has any idea how fast they would play it if they had Richter's technique, or Richter's profound and well-seasoned understanding of piano literature. He probably knows more about this piece than any of us do, so why are we questioning his interpretational motives? Great music can be played in various ways. If there was a "right tempo" or a "right way" to play this piece then it would be a shitty piece.

As much as I admire Richter in general, I think this is, for him anyway, a poor performance. Off-hand, brusque, too uniformly loud. This piece needs above all Innigkeit, and I think that is missing here.

Horowitz (for most of his career) was first a showman and technician and secondly, an artist. Thats not to say his playing was dull. He was awesome. But it wasn't until much later in life that he started to show the emotion that Richter did. Richter could pretty much hold his own against Horowitz technically. But he also had an artistic dimension that made him more interesting. Horowitz reputedly once said that the only contemporary Russian pianist whose playing he liked was Richter.

THank you! Classical pianists aren't dancing bears (or shouldn't be). Anyone who wants to see someone act out music needs to go to the opera. Even there, good luck finding a singer who puts so much music and depth of emotion, without the distractions of circus antics. Instrumental music is the human condition in sound, at best, and that's what Richter conveys, without distracting displays of visual antics. He remains one of the greatest musicians, and master of his art.

Though I would place it alongside Weingarten, Freiberg, Hamburg Jacobikirche, and the Mullers in Leeuwarden and Waalse Kerk Amsterdam. I like both of them although I would describe their style as a mix between the old "pure" Baroque practice and a more modern way of playing, influenced by hybrid organs (mechanical key action but with electric/pneumatic stops, use of modern fingers' substitutions, crescendo change of registrations, use of the toe/heel technique etc.) Also Christopher Herrick and John Scott Whitely are very good British organists.

I know your channel is closed... but you may read this in the future: loosen up on the opinions. Music is to be taken seriously but not on the level of music critics ;). What's important is that you respect a different interpretation now. Also you should set your sights higher than LL as his technique is good (not great) but his interpretation is lacking!

Fantastic video! The videoeffects do really work well. I would only have liked it if you added motion to all pictures and made them all fit into the whole window. Slow does not equal wrong. My opinion is the piece should start like this,it builds to the climax. Stokowski plays it this way in his orchestration,which is my favorite version. But I love the sound of the organ too, and Richter plays this magnificently. Too many critics and not enough people who enjoy music.

I don'think is possible to found a video but I listen a record dated 1959 , on great organ Schnitger of St.Laurenskerk. I want repeat what written by Karl Grebe on Walcha: Walcha himself indicated in a broadcast talk the disease which cut him off permanently from the visible word also opened up and smoothed for him the way to inner perception. However listening again this record in the final Richter play like Walcha.

Third, Look around. Is there a video of Walcha playing this piece around YouTube? This is my favorite piece, so I practically KNOW all the videos of it YouTube has. And sorry to say, Helmut Walcha's is not amongst it. So unless you post up his video you have no right to compare Richter's version with his. Karl Richter's playing was virtually immaculate. Many others here will undoubtedly agree with me. Now, I'm not saying Walcha wasn't as gifted. You should give Richter more credit, that's all.

First up, I don't get your first sentence at all- It just makes no sense. Care to elucidate? Second, turn your volume up if you can't hear it. And don't blame Richter, he's not at fault; for two reasons: 1) This video's really old, so blame its antiquity, if you want, and 2) Organ keys/pedals are not touch-sensitive. Newer organs have a 'swell pedal' that amplifies sound, but this one's still too old.

A 'modern' interpretation of Bachs organ work is to use one registration and don't switch manuals (like Ton Koopman does). But of course this doesn't apply to all pieces. A (brilliant) piece like Vierne's Final to Symphony No. 1 really needs switching manuals (or change registration when playing a smaller organ). Also in the performance of orchestral works there is a different insight in how to execute music: modern instruments in the past vs period instruments nowadays.

I too like a lot Koopman's performance (which I have found more "dramatic" then "majestic" though). As simple listener,I think that the true dimension of Richter was Chamber Music; his way to play organ seems very delicate to me,IMO more suited to harpsichord.I don't understand your "in the '70s" and "old style" though: Richer was 30yo in 1956, and "old" suggests an idea of evolution in the music praxis,which I don't agree with.Our sensitiveness is neither better nor worse then that of the past.
