I know what you mean. Except the whole cousin thing, I find myself agreeing very much with Billy Bob. Wait till 2010 then you can get your hands on the Chevy Volt. and EREV beats a Hybrid anyday. Plus, the Volt is an American car, so you know it will withstand abuse and bird droppings (not that I am implying that a Toyota can't even withstand bird shit or anything).

How so? It uses about half of the gas a Civic would, and I test drove it. It's a quiet car. Besides the sort of odd shape of the rear, and the fact you'd have to drive it for 10+ years to benefit from the fuel savings, it's a good car. And they have a pretty long waiting list (3 months in my local dealership), so I doubt they're Toyota's greatest failure if Toyota is making a crapload of money off of em'.

That's when it is all working correctly. At some point they will have major problems, and will be very costly to repair. That's another plus with the Escort diesel. It's all mechanical, and easily repaired. This electronics junk on newer cars is just... dumb. Most of the cars out thre have problems with the electronics within 3 years. I'd rather not have that, thanks. Chrysler's lifetime powertrain warranty is looking pretty good right about now.

I don't doubt it. Any car loses mileage if it is driven roughly. I just set the cruise control at 75 for a 100 mile trip. Anyone can do that. I normally dismiss diesel comparisons. Diesel is a different fuel type with more energy. If you want to debate that diesel is better than gasoline that's another thing. I would be reluctant to compare an Escort in quality but that is a subjective opinion. I suspect that the diesel Escort is significantly dirtier which is part of the appeal of a Prius.

You are somewhat correct, that is why the design is such that the batteries are kept at a constant minimum charge which allows much longer life. The Prius doesn't go through full discharge cycles.

No 100K miles is not the life of the car. The battery is designed for the life of the car and has a 100K warranty. Maybe a fraction of Ford trucks make it to 500K miles, I know people who have to replace transmissions in Rangers at 40K miles. You keep predicting replacing batteries but you aren't even saying 'dad' replaces batteries, just that he fixes Priuses. There are Priuses with over 100K miles still with the original batteries still working perfectly.

The prius doesn't get near that mileage, the EPA estimates are nowhere near actual mileage. And the prius doesn't get crap for mileage on the highway, only good in city driving conditions. And what are you gonna do when the warranty is up and all the electronics crap fails? You can't deny that it will, unless you are a complete imbecile.

Hybrids have killed people in accidents, the batteries explode and they don't save gas! Hybrids dont work because they are environmental. They need lots of repairs too. Better to wait for hydrogen and not doing anything until then. Hydrogen is made out of normal, regular fossil fuels so oil companies won't go bankrupt and hurt the economy and lose people's jobs. But if we buy hybrids, oil companies will lay everybody off and ipods will be too expensive. Think about JOBS not saving gas.

Toyota has hybrid technicians, the car isnt going to kill you if u change oil, people dont go cutting wires and stuff on these vehicles, the wires are orange, and as long as u dont mess with them your good. When the car is off there is no power to the front of the vehicle, and if theres any work on high voltage system the dealer has specific warnings to disconnect the service plug. Dont come up in here bringing false statistics about 10 people per month, the prius is very safe.

The Prius uses a 200V battery that drives a 500V electrical system after stepping up. The outlet at your home is only at 110V, do you play with your electric outlet without taking precaution? For example, in extreme cold or extreme hot climate, the heater or air conditioning burns energy and that comes from the gasline. Drivers who slam on the brake a lot transfer the car's kinetic energy to the brake pads and waste it as heat loss. The first 5 minutes of warm up wastes energy too. Air friction is proportional to the square of speed, e.g. 3X speed = 9X drag. So short trips and high speed lower milage.

Mileage varies depending on traffic condition, terrain, climate and most important of all driving habit. If you are lead-footed and slam on the brakes alot, milage will suffer. Frequent short trips hurt milage too. Milage ranges from 35 to 65 mpg depending on situations. Typical for daily 20 mile commute is around 48 mpg.

I would buy another one but there is a reason I have an xb and a prius the prius is deigned to be a daily driver that is the family car. Where we live we get 42 mpg no problem but we are too much city driving to gain the 60mpg. I recently took a trip and got 55mpg obeying the speed law strictly. It was not an interstate run. Toyota is producing a plug in prius it would be perfect for us we would never use petro. Wife 8 mile comm me a 30 mile but I go to work maybe 3 times a month hence the xb.

I already had my dream car. 1999 GMC Suburban 1500 SLT. Man that was a great car. When you wanted it to move, and you hit that gas pedal, that big V8 fuckin' went! And the brakes were great too. Smooth ride, plenty of space for everything, pretty damn good gas mileage for a suv of its size (16 or 17 mpg i think), extremely reliable, never broke down, never refused to start. Even after some dumb fuck in a, get this, Prius, ran a red light and T-boned me it still started up like nothing happened.

Hybrids have killed people in accidents, the batteries explode and they don't save gas! Hybrids dont work because they are liberal environmental. They need lots of repairs too. Better to wait for hydrogen and not doing anything until then. Hydrogen is made out of normal, regular fossil fuels so oil companies won't go bankrupt and hurt the economy and lose people's jobs. But if we buy hybrids, oil companies will lay everybody off and ipods will be too expensive. Think about JOBS not saving gas.

When you floor it from a stop there is actually an uncomfortable pause. After that the gas engine comes on and it accelerates pretty smoothly. You can check out my 0-60 video. 10 seconds is about right as I demonstrated. It is a combination of the electric and gas engine that makes it pretty good for acceleration but on its own the electric motor is very weak.

It's crap, buy a diesel turbo car. My diesel does 60mpg in the town and 70+ at 56mph. It costs a lot less and is faster than a Prius. In the UK the prius qualifies for £35/year road tax, my diesel is £115 but has lower emissions than a Prius! Diesel every time. Prius is OLD technology.

The Prius is a faliure in engineering and pollutes about as much as a Land Rover Defender through its production process. If you want a clean economical car drive a Volkswagen Diesel Rabbit/Golf. They can be powered off of biodiesel as well and can get in the 60mpg range. Not only is the production process of a Prius a failure, but it also has the same acceleration properties as a paperweight. If you want something sporty, go for a Mini Cooper, it'll do 37mph.

It all comes down to how much driving you do and the vehicle your moving from. If you already drive a Prius 20,000 miles a year (avg. 45 MPG), it might take 10 years to recover at $4 a gallon. However, if you get 20 MPG over the same distance now, and trade up for a 100 MPG plug-in at $4 per gallon, you could save over $3000 per year in gas. In that case, the added plug-in costs would be covered after three years and the rest is gravy.

However, the pollution reduction for using electric versus gasoline has been quoted as high as 97%! I found this website when reading up on EV1's that were destroyed. Take a look and I think you'll find that even if the numbers aren't exact, using electric vehicles is better than gas. Especially if coming from wind/solar/hydro plants.

You people are rediculous. They set a bar with a good handling vehicle so you know how a car should take the hammerhead and then tested three similar cars together and showed you how bad they were. The three cars are the ones being tested not the exige. The three cars being smaller than the exige should in fact take the corner better but because they are purely "eco-friendly" cars foremost and have no aspect of any kind of balanced setup for cornering.

I drove a Prius for 3 days, highway and city, no it does not handle like my Porsche, but its OK for what it is meant for. On the other hand my Porsche won't fit 4 adults, it gets 1/3 the MPG of Prius. The Porsche is a FAR better driving experiance, the Prius is FAR better at getting me between home and work.
