Real Word Problems From My Physics Book - PH17 Posted by: ArtieTSMITW

Acctually its liquid nitrogen poured onto a superconductor. When its supercooled it expels a magnetic field. When the magnet was placed on top it levitated.
By: TheKoreanX. on 29 Aug 08, 20:51:17
It is not dry ice. What he used was sulfur hexafluoride. It is 5 times more dense than regular air. So, because of it's density, it is able to hold up that silver thing. But be careful when using sulfur hexafluoride. Make sure the work area is vented well, or wear a mask because inhaling SF6 displaces the oxygen needed for breathing. It is similar to helium, except breathing SF6 results in a reduction of pitch instead.

whoooaa that's cooool
By: kidsexchange. on 29 Aug 08, 07:01:44
the thing he poured in was dry ice or a fog maker and that nitrogen and since it froze in the block and after a while it dies
By: SmokinTime420. on 28 Aug 08, 23:07:17
i dont understand how this was done

and i thought the coke and mentos was amazing lol
By: jmarcoj1. on 27 Aug 08, 20:33:07
yea i know, the concept obviously needs to be immensely developed, they have loads to discover.
By: xnick0. on 27 Aug 08, 11:33:05
But you can use a MagLev system, which is a series of polarity-changing magnets (from a extraordinary simplified point of view). Still it's necessary to have room-temperature superconductors...
By: tractor255. on 27 Aug 08, 11:18:01
Unfortunately it would not be a very effective form of transport. As far as I can see, one object remains a set distance from the other, therefore one would need to be moved in order for the other to do so. In the same way that you could not use a strong magnet to pull your car by leaning out and holding the magnet out the front.
By: mdwfrancis. on 27 Aug 08, 09:49:06
hmmm, this is interesting. would it be more expensive to develop this method of transport do u reckon?
By: chance1234asdf. on 27 Aug 08, 05:29:23
dude ur smart. Can you tell me what they yoused. thank you
By: prahlad3. on 27 Aug 08, 04:01:19
i m not a physics student and therefore will not spin my head thinking how it happen
By: Chris101988. on 27 Aug 08, 03:51:48
That is true as of today. However, with increasing knowledge of quantum mechanics, and rapid development of technology to synthesize new materials, it is very possible and likely that superconductors will become viable for use in many everyday applications. Nobody expects hovering cars with current technology. The idea is the technology will improve, making hovering cars viable. I'm just wondering how you'd accelerate or brake.
By: ibclappin. on 26 Aug 08, 23:41:48
for the scale shown there you can actually achieve similar Eddy Currents resulting from a spinning symmetrical geometric shape spun by HANDS over a simple circuit. it's nothing new. it would cost way less than using liquid nitrogen like they did here.
By: yakkit. on 26 Aug 08, 23:09:27
you kinda need room temperature superconductors to do that, though. The best superconductors we have these days need temperatures around that of liquid nitrogen to work. Basically, there'd be no benifit anyway. It's just an expensive way to make hovercars, without getting rid of the road space. Monorails already 'hover' off the rail using magnets. That's a much cheaper way to achieve what you're saying, and I can't say it's been popular.
By: jumpinpizza. on 26 Aug 08, 19:11:58
not if its developed widley in affordable ways
By: jmarcoj1. on 26 Aug 08, 15:19:15
because of what i said to barmybarmy123, hypothetically, if scientists found a way to coat the roads and create paths using superconductors, they might be able to build hovering cars.
