Let us say, then, that many things in our society are dependent on oil - on its low cost, its portability, and its versatility as not only a fuel but a feedstock for a wide variety of other products, that many if not most of our transportation, industrial, and food production needs would require rapid systems redesign if the supply of petroleum products were curtailed. Sure, we could limp along with less, and we may very soon get to try out that little experiment. Looking forward to it? Not me.

interesting point, however, crude oil prices, and prices at the pumps are not a mirrored number. The majority of consumers did begin conserving, as they were unhappy with $4 and up gas prices. But as soon as their conservation was reflected in gas prices, which in most places was a 70 cent plus drop, their "need" for conservation diminished. as a result prices will climb back to around 4 soon. This term of conservation was the product of rapid price growth, not with respect to peak oil

Today we STILL get plants to give us energy. When we tap maple tree trunks and drain some of the sap into buckets, we boil the sap down until it becomes maple syrup. GreenBean, oil is a collection of complex carbon molecules which are loaded with energy. The energy inside the oil molecules gets released when we light the oil on fire. The original source of the energy is sunlight from millions of years ago which shone down on the plants. Those same plants were all swept away in a planet-wide catastrophe that swallowed whole forests and caused the trapped sunlight that was still bound up inside the plants to get refashioned from crushed plants to oil droplets.

The peak may well be masked - by demand destruction, by recession, by wars or weather events that take production offline - but underneath all of the other events will be the actual flow of world oil supply. Once the peak is crossed, depletion will be irreversible, no matter how much additional supply is "created" because people choose or are forced to use less. We'll only know this has happened when we look in the rearview mirror at a history of consistently falling production.

hi,i believe in "peak oil" as i hear declining oil production of oil well.. but i don't agree this is what's gonna happen..i mean take a look at this graph..according to this,decline on oil production curve will be pretty mach opposite of climbing curve.(sorry my English). now look at whats been happening on oil price. as soon as it hit $147 a barrel ,people stop using cars or less,i mean "decline on demand" i think everyone is under-estimating the "the power of less demand" so...

I took this to mean that Hubbert (who predicted, in the 1950s, that US production would peak in the 70s) also predicted (in the 50s) a world peak that would occur in the early years of the 21st century. The first prediction was definitely accurate, the second appears, at the moment, to have come to pass in 2005.

And i'm not attacking anybodys preferences for food types, but I think the whole theory that organic food is healthy and better compared to industrial farmed food needs to be challenged because food today is in fact healthier than ever- comparing to some of the crap that my grandparents had to eat (organic- not that they thought of it as such). Technology is not the same as energy. Nanotechnologies still require energy input. Nothing we've developed yet has as much energy density as well as portability of oil. In the documentary "The Power of Community" which Megan talked about, we see how Cubans survived the sudden withdrawal of oil from their country. It was survival not necessarily preference.

we don't really have to pick sides. we don't have to say who's the bitch and whatnot... i think this is the fruit of the writers: make us interested and intrigued about the characters. I honestly don't know which side to pick and if this is still the "mean" Serena. One thing's for sure, we are still biting our nails for the next episode. And the best character on the show is definitely chuck. He is explored more in the episode that the viewers give sympathy for him. Dammit i love this show. xoxo

"Oil Companies" are actually Energy Suppliers and Exxon provides most of the Uranium to nuclear plants as well and Chevron is the largest producwer of commercial Geothermal Power and also Hydro-Electric. Saudis don't have as much oil that they say they do, but they are intentionally trickling the spigot. Truth of the matter is that a barrel is 47 gallons, and the Saudis get about 5 cents a gallon, and the Oil Companies make 10 cents a gallon of their end of the deal with government subsidies covering the loss of about $7 a gallon in transporting it and selling it to a refiner.

It won't make any difference. Even if by some chance you find a huge oil field of several billion barrels it will make minimal differnce and will take at least 10-15 years to produce. What you need to do is invest in renewables - you got plenty in the States - it's clean and would boost the economy in a new way.

I'm a power engineer and I can tell that there's no way America will make up for fossil fuels with renewables. That role will be reserved to coal. As for what he sais about hydrogen I strongly disagree. Hydrogen storage is 4x more compact and 16x lighter than state of the art batteries. Don't tell me that mid sized sedans will ever drive on batteries as hydrogen is barely sufficient a carrier. And finally, gasoline is also an energy carrier just like hydrogen...
