It's spiritual, if you want it to be.Gotta remember, Tool lyrics are ambiguous as can be, so our innate need for validation and self service will form the meaning to be whatever we need it to be at the time.I think,objectively,that it's a song about the fine line between being an upstanding, peaceful citizen of the world, and just saying "Fuck the restraints; I've been pissed off for a long time and for a good reason,and will now run amok"--"the patient", as in patience.

I think for a man to write lyrics like this he must often feel isolated and unable to connect with others, which is painful and very hard to live with. Reminding himself that there are times of 'reward' or 'desire to heal' (in other words do positive things for other people and feel good for it regardless of whether people see it or give it back to you) is a strong theme in the song. Its his internal battle to choose life and positivity over bowing down to an acute sense of emotional pain.

I was fortunate enough to see this film when it was shown in the Philippines... and, naturally, I became curious about the novel and bought it. In my humble opinion, this story can be ranked side by side with The Wings of the Dove and The Piano. Wonderful in its tragic beauty.

First of all I am a HUGE fan of George Michael and "Father Figure" (I still listen to it in heavy rotation). I am a fan of PM Dawn and thought this song was beautiful.
