sg1....Listen to the version over to the right in b&w. Mark's a bit older now but I don't see any loss in passion or talent. I think it's safe to say it's a difficult song for him to sing and everytime I see this song live the emotion just pours from the guitar and Mark himself.There is and will be no other Knopfler in our lifetime, i'm grateful to be able to witness something like this. This is possibly the greatest song ever, and Mark's perormances are unmatched.

Those commenting his singing being bad, I don't think so. His main part is playing the guitar, and his singing is distinctive. It's in tune and for the most part just how it's supposed to be. The fact that he moves around and doesn't control the distance to the mic well is easy to see. It would've sounded better if he had a mic on his head which is more usual today. I think it's great.

People forget that "solos" in songs arnt just about how fast or complicated it sounds, its supposed to be a musical outburst of passion, as dumb as it sounds. So at that point in the song everyone playing should be really passionate, which most times means playing a little harder.

The music was good, if not great but at the 2 minute mark the video becomes extremely distracting. In my (obviously biased) opinion a video should show us what we want to see without our even being aware of the edits. This one looks like a guy playing with his new video toy. The post even mentions "4cams". Unfortunately, that's not what makes a good video.

The song is a bit of a story, about builders leaving Newcastle to find work in Germany, becuase of unemployment in the 1980s. The references are clearly not of people going to Newcastle, but reluctantly leaving it behind. It's pretty much like the story of the TV series "Auf Weidersehn Pet" and was used as the theme to the third series.
