The main problem with Michio is that he seems to be just throwing out random numbers and hoping they match up. It's very unscientific of him, if you ask me. Though it's true that digital computers of today work nothing like our brains. There's an interesting video on here, a presentation by Kwabena Boahen, which highlights the differences between digital and brain computing, and how we can make a computer operate more like our brains. Definitely an interesting watch.

The roadrunner does 1.7 petaflops, about 1.026 quadrillion calculations per second. However Michio is wrong (or speculating), the human brain has roughly 1 trillion cells with 1 trillion connections between them, that gives a potential 10 quadrillion instructions per second, but no one can really say what we really do. None of that matters though because brain functions are not digital sequential, they are multifaceted, simultaneous logic processes. No computer can do that... yet.

This shows that Michio Kaku was clueless and it is shameful that he discounted Kurzweils predictions. Kaku is a theoretical physicist and Kurweil actually makes products. At 2:18 Kaku says Moores law will collapse in 15 years. Kaku's recent appearances in the Science channel shows that he finally is catching up to what Kurzweil has been writing many years before. Kaku is acting like a politician.

Well as it stand, AI wont take over because of one important reason. it does not have a consciousness...it may have an algorithm for it but as every algorithm has its parameters(meaning it has certain laws which it must follow and certain things it cannot do) as humans with no known parameters on our consciousness we are "more advanced" and have the capability to find loopholes and and advantages which we can exploit to our advantage in the algorithms of AI...maybe paramterless chaos theory??

Maybe. I'm hard pressed to think of another field or frontier science which has so infamously failed to deliver on its promises. I tend to think that AI is inevitable, but I'm wary of time frames. The fact that the AI community has this reputation is a little scary, since it would seem to suggest that they think they know a lot more about AI than they do. This kind of ignorance increases the chance of AI becoming a disaster for mankind. Hybrid's would probably be safer...

I think along the lines that you do. By intelligent life, you're not talking necessarily about humans, right? It's kinda sixes whether the singularity will be good or bad for us. Depending on how AI develops, it will destroy us, ignore us, or aid us. perfect in the MOMENT when she says 'i love you David' that was Davids goal in the whole movie and he succeeded :). I would like to know Ehrman's opinion on the following: He says the "human free will/robot" argument doesn't account for tsunamis and earthquakes. Well within the bible, he'd have to know that it does. Adam/Eve's free action in the garden (regardless of its historicity)gets a curse put on creation. This is definitly how the New Testment interprets the event. Why else would the apocalypticists want a new creation at the end of time? It seems free will does account for that. Any thoughts?

What is important to me is that Goleman has brought EI and SI into the mainstream. Although some posts point to deficiencies I suggest that he is doing something important and valuable to enrich our work and social lives. Scott Peck mave have had his faults but the Road Less Travelled started many on their own journey of self discovery and self improvement.

Goleman is just a science journalist. He knows how to write articles, but not scientific discoveries. EI was an old wine in a new bottle, SI is even an old wine in an old bottle. It was tossed by Thorndike in 1921 as "social intelligence". Look for Mayer and Salovey.

Well.. I enjoyed Emotional Intelligence, Working with Emotional Intelligence and am currently reading Social Intelligence .. all by Goleman.. Infact my curiousity on the subject infused by my own life learnings led me to the subect (which we now call EI)... Ironically it is them that are more aware of this, that end up reading these books..

Haha, hey we agree with each other! I think I lack social intelligence as well! In fact, I'm pretty sure I went so far as to say the whole concept is based on nothing and therefore everyone lacks social intelligence! Actually Emotional Intelligence and Social Intelligence are very important theories that I have seen demonstrated innumerable times in my life (60 years and going strong) and in the lives of others I have lived with or observed. Using curse words to try to convince others is a good example of a LACK of emotional intelligence and social intelligence. See Goleman's book "Working with Emotional Intelligence" for a good definition of the components of Emotional Intelligence.

Just STFU Goleman. This is basically what he is saying: "I've taken research from neuroscience and constructed some bullsh*t theory around it so I can extend a concept I HELPED INVENT (emotional intelligence) and make more money." If anyone ever meets him as him to define intelligence. If he can't answer that he should NOT have extended Gardner's work on mutliple intelligence's to encompass this.

I *love* crows! There are a lot of them where I live. I never throw away left-overs, etc. I put them out for the crows. They eat just about anything. And it's true...they recognize me even if I have on a hat, shades, different clothes, big coat... whatever, and start begging when I go out to get in my car, lol. Native American folklore says the crow is clever and a bit naughty, but an ally. An interesting fact: a flock of crows is actually called a "murder"! Great vid! 5*s and Faved.
