I'm no longer trying to be an ass, but I do have to correct that statement. There is footage on this site of a lion taking a starving baby gazelle in as it's own child. Infact the lion nearly starved to death because it followed the little gazelle around until it died while trying to catch up with it's herd which left it behind. It even tried to nurse the gazelle. Also elephants mourn for their dead group members. Plus all primates have sounds or bodylanguage which they use to communicate.

Hyenas are a formitable force in large numbers but what I guess I am saying that 1 on 1 they wouldnt stand a chance. Still they are an adaptable and opportunist carnivore. Without a faster or more powerfull preditor nearly always a big cat to take down the prey they would have little to scavange and no kills to steel and they would not last too long. So as you can see Hyenas benifit from steeling from big cats, therefore need big cats, but the big cats would do better without Hyenas.

correction: the hyena's jaw produces more pressure per cubic inch than that of a lion, but no hyena what so ever have a jaw at the size of an adult male lion's jaw which is stronger thanx to it's size -i think- any way the hyena wont have a chance to use it's jaw on the lion's skull :D

Hyenas = one of my favorite animals. Having wild pets is tempting to think about, but in the long run, it's cruel and selfish. One of you says it's a great idea. Then somebody argues it's not cos you may get crushed by their massive jaw strength. Someone else responds they don't care; they'll teach the hyena to like people & everyone will live happily ever after. It's not just you that matters. You forget and personafy animals too much. Hyenas dont dont have the capacity to care about how another animal feels while it is being eaten. Kungfoo I hope you realize that most carnivores eat other animals while they are alive, not just hyenas. When the animal cant move, the feeding process starts. They gotta hurry up and disembowel it and eat the most nutritious parts of the animal (the organs) before bigger predators like lions come along and steal it from them. Animals rarely are able to spend more than 20-30 minutes eating a meal before some other predator shows up. African Wild Hunting Dogs do the same thing. I love how people have no clue what they're talking about and then call hyenas mean for trying to survive in a harsh environment where every meal counts.
