The only natural cycles Earth goes thru that cause climate change are the Milankovitch Cycles (AKA Orbital Forcing), which drive the Ice Ages. As the ice retreats, temperatures rise & vegetation grows. Later, the decomposing vegetation produce an annual level of CO2 explaining the lag (temp vs. CO2). But now, this natural cycle is being offset by human activity (deforestation & air pollution from mostly fossil fuels). Earth IS warming and it's human activity causing it. Cause & Effect 101

while i agree we have to break our addiction to foreign oil i do not believe we are causing global warming take a look at the hadley data. it basically states that from 1860-1879 it warmed more than 1940-1970. but in the 1800s C02 was only 2 ppm while C02 from 1940-1970 was something like 35ppm. do you see a correlation? i dont.

With rare exceptions, the only criteria for publishing a paper are (1) it's important, and (2) the conclusions are supported by the data. Peer review doesn't guarantee perfection in individual cases, but in aggregate, it has ensured that the universal acceptance of anthropogenic warming is supported by conclusive data. It also filters out much nonsense found outside of peer-review.

solargw - I haven't weighed the atmosphere recently, but 5000 trillion tons sounds about right, and is consistent with the CO2/temperature data showing CO2 to be the predominant warming influence since the 1970s, and a partial factor, along with solar increases, early in the 20th century. Essentially, you're correct; a storm's energy is limited by the Carnot cycle for the temperature difference between the two or three cells involved. However, the heat makes the lifting air current belts at the equator and the two tropics more intense, so winds are more active (more storms) and temperature differences are able to become more exaggerated due to these winds (greater intensity).
