Also think of greensleeves, where the seventh chord is the second harmony right after the tonic; that says quite something about the distance between these two. And as far as i know, major/minor is not an important characteristic to determine the distance between two harmonies.

bolins drug problem really affected his playing ,i ben in bands with a few druggies and when they were high there playing wasnt as good even though they swore it was till they heard it on tape playback.that spectrum album with bolin is awesome,bolin played great on come taste the band,hughes is great on the trapeze album with mel galley and dave holland who also played drums for judas priest , hollands a good grove drummer.

Stormbringer totally blew me away. I would rate Stormbringer and Burn about the same, as far as my taste. To this day, I think that the vocal harmonies of Hughes and Coverdale have never been outdone. There will never be another Glenn Hughes, nor another David Coverdale. Nor another Paul Rogers. Let us truly relish their presence while they are with us, and not wait until they are gone ala Hendrix, Kossoff, Rhoads, Vaughan, etc. They are living legends.

Maybe you are right. You should check out his solo stuff. He was great with the James Gang, and his work with Billy Cobham was just phenomenal. I have read Glenn's opinion of him and it was very high. Others who have played with him have had nothing but good things to say about him as a person and a musician. I actually hear that he was very insecure about taking Blackmore's spot in Purple. I'm sure that didn't help.

have you seen how Bolin butchers Smoke on the Water, Coverdale does it great but hughes could have done it better by himself, or if it was Ian and Glenn it would have been paradise. Bolin complete fucks it up, he doesn't go along with Lord on Keyboards. The Keyboards and Guitar are suppose to be one on that song and he prances around and goes out of the boundaries of the song. How can you go wrong with a combo of Soul, Funk, Blues and Rock, i perfer the Ian Gillan led Deep Purple but Glenn Hughes has got more soul and depth in his vocals then Ian Gillan will ever have, plus he just much plain better then Gillan, but without a doubt Ian and Glenn are millions of times better then Coverdale, if Deep Purple went on with just Hughes on vocals and someone besides that fairy Tommy Bolin on guitar, i think i could have been able to tolerate deep purple better

Regardless, his voice has more muances than Gillan and Coverdale could ever master, wether beeing it hard rock, rock, soul/funk. His high pitching ability is insane and he can most definitely sing hard rock. He hasn't got the same voice as gillan. He's got a much better one. Hughes said himself in an interview in "Inside Deep Purple" that he hasn't got a Hard Rock voice as Gillian had and he also said he didn't really like to sing Hard Rock song but he prefers more soul songs. And that's also why Blackmore left the band, because, the whole band took an other direction. Mark III wasn't playing Hard Rock song only. It was more like soul, for instance take Stormbringer album, with Hold On, or Holy Man.

When Mark III was being put together, Coverdale said to Blackmore, "why do you need me when you've already got the best rock vocalist going in Glenn Hughes?" Trapeze weren't just about soul and funk. But Ritchie wanted a five piece band and Coverdale was more high profile. To say Hughes hasn't got a voice for rock is silly, to say that people told him that to qualify it is ridiculous.

Not only did Bach own several clavichords, but it was his favorite keyboard instrument, according to his first biographer, Forkel, based on interviews with Bach's own sons. Bach's music transcends the instrument. It is presumptuous to assume that Bach's style would have changed if the piano were available, for the same reason he did not write chamber music in the style of Brahms or Debussy and for the same reason why Baroque artists did not paint like Picasso despite having the same tools.

If you study the score, you will see he adapted the soloist part a lot to make it suit the new instrument better. Sometimes he even rearranged the orchestra parts. Isn't it plausible for me to think that - if Bach would have known the grand piano as we use it today - he would have written different music?

Other keyboards existed in Bach's time, including the clavichord, which was capable of dynamic expression. Bach also transcribed works for different instruments or combination of instruments. (e.g., Bach's D-major keyboard concerto is simply a transcription of his violin concerto in E major). It is dangerous to assume that he would have written differently if the modern piano existed in his time.

"Sickeningly steadily" is hardly the phrase to describe it. In fact, I don't think I could listen to an unsteady interpretation for long. It is from this "sickening" steadiness and measured tempo that Gould and Bernstein draw the real potency and magic from this work. In my eyes, one of the greatest realizations of this concerto out there.

Thats how different taste is. I, for one, love this interpretation. The interesting thing about this guy is not his interpretations as such, but his consistency. He does one thing, or has one particular opinion on an interpretation, and he applies that until the piece is finished. He's logical in his approach. His sense of rhythm is something i wouldn't call steady, but constant & indomitable. He's strict. Not like many romantic bach interpreters who can't decide what tempo to choose.

Bach wrote this piece for "Klavier" (German) which - in his time - ment harpsichord or organ (listen to the fantastic version played by Marie-Claire Alain). Our grand piano did not exist yet, and I am sure he would have written his concerti in a whole different way if he would have known the instrument. humm, I've been studying piano for about 17 years now but only starting to get an idea of the diversity of classical composition. Maybe, faster versions would have more umph. But, as a student, I love that you can study what he's doing at this speed and thus able to acquire a much more in depth understanding of the music. Also, it's really not so bad like it is...can't we enjoy both versions and speeds?

I hate being negative, but I really can't imagine why everyone loves this so much... He plays it so slow! And his tempo is so sickningly steady that I woul believe he's got a metronome under his chair. Give Bach some credit and play it like real music! Long live Angela Hewitt or Murray Periah. Or still better: Christophe Rousset (on harpsichord) :)
