The wings are angled to allow the craft to stabilize regardless of the direction the it's facing when it re enters. They don't show it, but there is little chance of the ship spiraling perfectly along its axis of movement. More likely that it will pitch and yaw off centerline. Really, the angling wings improve passenger comfort during re entry by lifting the nose.

Actually, the friction of re entry is not related to the wing position. The shuttle, or any other spacecraft, only experience heat because of the speed at which they move through the atmosphere - a byproduct of the speed needed to reach orbit. This pseudo spacecraft never goes into orbit, it only follows a steep arc that brings it back into the atmosphere at relatively the same location and speed as its departure. Not more than a couple thousand mph = little or no heat of re entry.

Wrong.. the wings fold up and are protected against the excess friction. They have already completed a successful test with Spaceship one. The math from what I read is working out quite well with space 2 designs. I guess we will only know for sure was they start the test flights. However.. wind tunnel tests look promising.

call me pesimist but in order to break eart's pull you need to have a speed of 17500 mph and this plane doesn't have what it takes to reach that even if it is launched at a high altitude, and the return the tremendous friction will tear those wings apart NASA as any government agency is a money pit but I think they got it just right with the space shutle, the SR71 with those powerfull engines makes only about mack 3.

Well kimmel310, if you knew much about space travel or the ansari prize and Virgin success or about their first ship you would then realize that with that design the ship doesn't require heating tiles. It is light enough and the atmospheric entrance surface area is large enough that the ship doesn't burn up on re-entry like NASA's heavy shuttles. I would hope you never get your hands on the money to design and build your own ship. I'd file a lawsuit on attempted murder.

Actually at that press conference Branson and Rutan were talking about their future vision of intercontinental travel. Their next ship will have more passengers and lower price. Once(if) the mass production begins it will be even cheaper. Branson compared it with the first intercontinental flights of Yankee- Clipper in the 30'sWere the tickets went for $30K in todays money. Space contains infinite materials and of course space. While the basic technology has existed to serve humanity in ways such as self-sustaining, self-regenerating colonies, mining of infinite amounts of energy... the details needed for the applicability of any such technologies have been encumbered by ONLY ONE thing. Cheap space flight - something the government isn't working too hard on, at least not comparably. The advances made by Branson can serve as a technical and economic model.

I have to agree with CJD on this one, it seems just a tool for the wealthy to waste their time and money on. We already have air travel, why not pump some of that money into the vacuum tunnel from NYC to Paris that has been developed? Get to Paris in less than 56mins from NYC with little to no fuel/pollution is much more practical than billions spent on space travel. Air travel has been around for decades, let's reinvent the wheel.

Once you get out there, everything becomes dots of light -- Earth, too. That is fun for a few minutes, but very lonely after just a bit of time. They have in secret its called Aurora. It a military program much like the blackbird and stealth where. The jet runs on conventional fuel then at a certain altitude switches over to scram jet rockets reaching I think speeds of mach8. Conspiracy theorist think if you see con trails in the sky and there is like a pulse effect, that's the jet. I dont think there is such a thing as getting too high. Correct me if I'm wrong, but if you get too high you'll just fall back to earth in this case because the velocity is only aimed "upward" and away from gravity. To get "stuck" (or in other words, to get in orbit) I think you also need a velocity parallel to the surface of the earth. Besides, this ad is not premature because spaceshipone already flew this way.

Nobody said this thing was going to achieve LEO. Spaceship Two is a sub-orbital spacecraft reaching a height of around 100km (the generally accepted edge of space), with an extremely steep trajectory. This is much easier to achieve. It also has relatively low fuel requirements due to the two-stage launch (from about 14km, btw), small payload, and lightweight composite construction. Even ignoring all that, Spaceship One accomplished a similar feat not too long ago. It was in all the papers!

LEO is at least 200 miles and even high altitude jets cannot exceed 20 miles - 16 miles to be more accurate, or around 85 000' It takes an unbelievable amount of energy to achieve even LEO and this cartoon doesn't have it. You can achieve a weightless effect by diving a plane faster than the objects inside, but that's another game entirely.

The technology isn't a pipe dream. The question is, is the market ready for it. SS4 is a long way off. Scaled and VG are really focusing on suborbit at the moment and for some time to come. If I were you, I'd be keeping an eye on SpaceX, SpaceDev, Kistler (down, but not out), and the dozen or so other names putting rockets on the pad. SpaceX is supposed to demonstrate their Dragon by late '08 or early '09. It may not be man-rated at that point, but I suspect it will be shortly after.

A year or so ago I heard that SS3 would be potentially orbital. Had I misheard, or did that change? Also, there's talk all over the place in the blogosphere of WK2's potential to launch a small tsto rocket, achieving orbital on what they have now. It all depends on the payload capacity which has not been clarified. I presume WK3 will be able to lift more than WK2, surpassing that mark by a long shot. So with or without SS4 we may see a Scaled orbital offering.

Virgin are looking at the options for a SS3, which for commercial reasons is likely to be a much larger version of SS2 and will provide point-to-point travel. Rumours were that SS4 is on the drawing board too and will be able to fly in orbit, space hotels etc...

Brilliant! I strongly believe that by SS4...we should be able to find a way to get to orbit. NASA can work on the big Moon/Mars stuff while the civilian takes care of the earth-side. I hope its not a pipe-dream...

Yes but traveling from L.A. to London using this technology would only take 4 hours at the most. This project not specifically aimed at that, but once it becomes an entrepreneur investment, the science progresses and soon (decade or so) we'll find ourselves traveling the world quickly.

What the Virgin Galactic 2 wants to do is to explore and give people a sense of space travel, yes it is unknown, but a chance to go up there is something amazing. Plus it would give people a chance to think more on the advances of space technology, and considering the fact that it costs big money in order to actually get a flight on that thing, hopefully those rich dudes are willing to fund some more space missions

love or hate Branson, certainly this is a necessary first step towards bringing space travel to the public domain. NASA does good science, but profit, or the potential for profit, has always been the great motivator of technological advance (or at least the practical application thereof).
