You probably didn't see any of this then, but while they're training, they can have up to four men hitting and poking them. And that's not even mentioning the "phajaan", the Thai "crushing" ritual where baby elephants' spirits are broken by horrible beatings, starvation and torture. I don't think it's likely. I think singers really have to concentrate on what their doing while performing and roll with the show and not let any nostalgia get in the way. Brandon Boyd, my favorite musical artist, has said that he can't sing an emotionally wrought break-up song and think about what drove him to write it in the first place because he gets emotionally distracted and fucks it up. Then again, Damien Rice is not Brandon Boyd, and maybe he has an ability to sing right through it.
