I think its about transformation. Awakening of something within you that isnt quite normal but at the same time an awakening none the less. Being lost and found at the same time but losing yourself bit by bit until your unrecognizable even unto yourself. Rights of passage or simply insane the journey continues on and intensifies. The instrumentation is voicing it also and you dont need acid to hear this. :)

No, he didn't use a slide. Watch live at Pompei an you will see taht he is not using a slide. The sound at the beginning of te solo is made with the tremolo. By playing an open Bm chord.

I noticed it synced up when he started flying over the land. When he arrived at the house. When he saw the monolith in bed. When they showed outer space again in the final shots, and finally the whole visual sequence ends exactly when the song ends. That's a lot of similarity. And those effects look a lot better than today's fake computer animated crap.
