We've got developers developing for the IPhone. Yes, multi-touch and motion detection adds for nice effects, but holy cow is the thing "locked down"... you're only able to run 1 app at a time, you can't do a lot of things you think you should be able to do... like contact the damn phone from a server. Anyways, we'll make money on both... but the IPhone is not a better OS.

I have mixed feelings towards this. Whilst the demo was extremely quick to show, it certainly lacked complexity. I would like to see a demo which had : a) A more complex structured object and associated databases (that looked like all SQL had to be hand coded, ouch) b) More complex business logic (where would all the business logic be defined? Where can default actions be defined for administrative functions? How can Individual user actions etc be defined?)

Ruby is a language, Ruby on Rails is the web framework. Listen nothing wrong with Python, Ruby just does the job for me. I use java too, but not all projects require java. Idiots. Ruby on Rails isn't as language, it's a framework. I doubt you can even code outside of your little container. Reading your post makes me believe you're that "weekend programmer" you talk about. It's obvious you're not just going to do that for a website, but it's all the packages GAE has that makes it useful for big, well organized projects. Try using frameworks like Zend (for PHP) and you will see it all works like this. You don't create a web application with a click unless you use a CMS.

I disagree. I think this video did what it was supposed to do: introduce the developer to the Google App Engine and how it can be used. Then the developer can read through the documentation and explore a bit more. A similar app in PHP would take just about the same amount of code. Consider you have to connect to the database, test to make sure the query went through, and then display the shouts. I think this was a fantastic video, and I'll definitely be checking out Google App Engine soon.

This video is very disappointing. I would think that google would come up with something better. It seams like this is a lot of hasle for something so simple. If it takes this much code for something minuscule as this, how hard would it be to connect to a relational database. That is what we would use in the real world. Not just a very simple text box to label web site. If you are to post in the future please send something the business world can use, not just the weekend programmer can use.

Actually that's wrong. Jeff Han uses his FTIR (frustrated total internal reflection) touch screen, Surface uses infrared cameras and iPhone uses a mutual capacitance touch screen. Jeff's screen is the best one because of its low cost and precision (plus the ability of sensing pressure).

If you're going to play around with a computer, do that at home. In a restaurant you'd rather want to talk to the other people you're out with. 3. Most things will be lacking tags and information. 4. Well, I would argue that these serve a purpose; if decorative elements are completely expendable in your eyes, then I would instead recommend BeOS, which is one of the ugliest OS's on the planet. It's a cross between a 70's colour sheet and Windows 95 but it is brutally stable and none surpass it when it comes to media. Vista's aero makes it a pleasant to work with, so does XGL Beryl in Linux. Granted, wobbly windows may not be revolutionary but they add to the experience IMO. Your call. :D

You know, this actually has a lot of applications, although at first it seems kind of useless...you could communicate with your neighbor visually, for example..you could use less paper for reminders...anyway, what would be even kooler is if there was an optical application, such as a pair of sunglasses or maybe even nanotech contact lenses which could act as receviers from a remote hard drive and could display information in front of your eyes??? idk...theres sooo many uses, dont doubt it.

The phon... no Ipo... no web-browsing device seems great. But i can see many weak sides to. The device didnt seem to have a camera and is very big (imagine it in your pocket), the touch-screen seemed fragile and prone to become dusty/dirty, and I seriously wonder how text messages are writen on the mobile phone. I still think its cool... but expensive
