As people have said before, it doesn't matter who comes first, hell dinosaurs could of roared their version of death metal for all we know. Imo it's just who makes a real impact, whether they're out in 80, or 90, or 95, whenever, if they make a big enough impact, they're the example set, Possessed just didn't do it for me. Yeah it was Mantas around that period, but imo Death was deffo the start of death metal for me, some have their own views, still Death made great timeless music. Rip.

I think d6m6h6 is confusing what he's heard. Its because classical music in england in the middle ages(if I recall right) beleived that only the root note and the fifth note harmonized, and lots of metal uses fifth chords. Other than that, there's really not that many similarities.
