The problem with the smart car is not the rigidity and crumple zones, its the mass, or lack thereof... you hit anything with substantially greater mass and the g-shock is going to be far greater in the Smartcar... that is what would kill you. The lack of large crumple zones to dissapate energy (relying more on the rigidity of the shell) makes matters worse. At least they point this out in the video.

Don't forget that the range is the maximum range, and that is when you drive really really slow. If you drive at top speed, you get terrible range... because drag is an exanding exponential of speed. (ICE's waste a lot of energy when their power isn't used, so max range occurs when you make use of the power .. when you cruise in top gear with the rpm's low)

This is a conversion of a gas car. You can add radio, windows, doors, alarm, ac, heater, power steering and whatever else you want. It will only decrease your mile range by a bit that's all (just like it would do to a normal car). Also the 150 miles range is plenty. You go to work, you come home, you go shopping or whatever, then over night you plug it in. 1-2$ per charge for 150 miles is perfect. With 4 bucks for a gallon of gas you go 20-25 miles? With 4 bucks electricity you'll go +400 miles.

I used to work in automotive design and I think this is a very interesting idea. I am sure a solution to adequate performance in a side impact could be found, the up and down support from the middle strut is not as important as you might think. Also mechanical override could easily fixed power loss issues. Only one that would suck is denting (of door or side tracks) making it hard to open close door. I like it.

Many regular car doors won't open in an accident anyway. Quite often the fire-crews need to use (what we in the UK call the Jaws of Life) to cut away the roof in order to free trapped patients from a crashed vehicle. If your car falls into a river, you are going to have trouble opening the door until the car is completely full of water. I agree that there should be some kind of "manual release" but I do like the design.

i never said that oil wasn't useful. i'm well aware of just how many petroleum products are in use today. even if all vehicles were electric, petroleum would still go into the construction of the vehicle. yes, there are lots of families who can't afford $21,000 for a car, but those same families can't afford the astronomical cost of gas either. Give the oil companies HUGE tax breaks and perks to invest their R& D money in manufacturing and developing these types of vehicles, put all the out of work, laid off due to market cuts auto workers into the electric market. Yep, they're pretty much the exact same song... if you only listen to the first few lines of the song that happen to have a similar amount of syllables. I'd be willing to bet that Arcade Fire has heard "on the dark side," but the meat of the songs differs quite a bit. At any rate, if you're really upset about bands that borrow from other bands, you might as well just stop listening to new music. Its nearly impossible to build a totally unique sound, as everyone is influenced by what they hear

Yes, i can see the resemblance with the completely different lyrics, guitar, bass and piano; as well as the lack of violin and brass instruments.
