Okay assholes, we get it. There's no sound (though the point of the piece was to point out that there's ALWAYS sound [the idea came to him after spending time in a "sound proof" chamber at Harvard, where one can still detect the sound of one's own nervous and circulatory systems in function]). This piece is a just agimmick, of course, but John Cage was a brilliant and innovative composer. Take a listen to the Sonatas and Interludes for prepared piano and his greatness is apparent.

I can't wait till he finishes his Mambo for Percussion and Strings without Percussion or Strings :) I'm working on Sonatina in F, Op. 38 for Piano Bench (pianist adjusts the bench up and down to a 23/4 meter for 7 minutes). Connecting the phrasing correctly is especially tricky. /sarcasm off :P I like silence and everything, but Cage has GOT to be the greatest salesman in the world - people pay to hear silence XD

Ya it makes sense actually to compare him to Bruce Lee because of his dynamic striking ability. Bruce Lee if you read or check out his books used the same moves. Side kick, backfist, back kick etc. These moves were emphasized in Jeet Kune Do. Although Bruce Lee wasn't as heavy as Bruce Lee. Bruce Lee wanted speed so he kept his weight low. I am sure if he was born in the MMA era of fighting he would be a top contender and would have brought he weight up. He was only 128 lbs, cung le is 180-200.

well, this brings up the important question: what is music? perhaps it is the production of sound in an organized fashion. is a bird chirping music? because the bird is most likely not singing with the intent that others will sit and listen to it. cage's music makes you think. sound is everywhere, intentional or not. cage noted that when in the anechoic chamber at harvard he could still hear 2 sounds: his heart beat and his breathing. is that music or just sound? how do you distinguish the 2?

Does anyone feel that Cage's piece is not as effective because it gives you an explanation for each and every sound? I played this to my fello artists and most preferred the audio on it own.this gave the audience more time to think about the sounds he was making. Or are the married and made a s one?

Idiot. This piece was one of Cage's hoaxes! He used to produce jokes like this occasionally to see if the people claiming to admire his music could tell the difference between his 'real' music and the 'joke' pieces. Of course they were caught out, pretending to admire 'music' which Cage himself regarded purely as a bit of meaningless theatrical fun. Cage was a great man.
