as a teenager growing up in the early '70's i used to think Burt Bacharach was just a corny square. but over the decades, as my musical tastes matured, i finally realised what a consummate classy master of pop he really is. and obviously that once "angry young man" Elvis Costello saw the light, too!

Yeah, I kinda like this version better too. You know, too bad they didn't try to simulate this scene in the movie with LIV ULLMANN teaching the children a new song as a "music teacher" with a piano, rather than a full scale production number. It would be great if some of Bacharach's specials could be released on DVD.

I'm not a choir kid, but I really hope someone can tell me what Mr. Bacharach's cues mean... At 0:55 , he says "lilt." What does that mean? I love when he asks (1:28) "who's got the 'bobadop!?" and the girl NAILS IT! (2:21) but says "dobadop" instead!!!!! Do I need to get a life?? LOL Maybe I need to "reach!" (3:02) LOL BOBBADOP (3:14)

Thanks for posting this. This is definitely a different recording than the one used in the sound track of the film. The orchestration sounds quite a bit smaller, and (as mentioned in other comments) the children in this clip are British. Easy way to tell is by listening to the first syllable of the word 'circle'.

It's great to see all these artists, but after Bacharach's singing (which is painful at best--great composer--one of the best of all time, but he shouldn't be singing as many songs as he does here) the rest is pretty much ALL pre-recorded stuff straight from the studio recordings (with maybe only Liza Minelli's voice the only real thing--maybe, not sure)...too bad.

Stumbling onto this video, I feel like I arrived at Mecca. I always loved Burt's music, and especially loved it when he sang it himself. Burt, put out a record of you singing your own compositions. I know it exists, because I remember it from my parent's record collection. A lot of people would groove on it. You don't have the voice, but, like Fred Astaire, you've got the soul. Dionne Warwick became one of Burt Bacharach favorite singers,as she sang many of his compositions. My favorite is "Anyone who had a heart" Great song!!! That's the problem with you "kids" today, you don't know about quality songwriting. I grew up in the late 80's listening to older stuff like The Beatles, The Beach Boys, Love, The Doors, The Byrds and great bands like that. You need to learn to appreciate music and not just download a bunch of junk-riddled songs with predictable power chords and stupid lyrics. You'll learn unless you are a retard, just playing.....

No, I don't think it was anything like that. Search YouTube for Great Performances Burt Bacharach Part 6. Herb Alpert and Richard Carpenter talk about the song, and how it was changed at the behest of Alpert, and wasn't anything malicious, or other than that, just thought it could use a different arrangement. Side note, I knew of the Carpenter's version first, and came across this version by accident. I have to say you can definitely feel Bacharach more in this version than the other!

this show was recorded in 1971. karen was still alive back then. the carpenters didn't like the song so they wanted to change the it. and so they did change the arrangement. so i think burt bacharach wouldn't like to play his song the way they changed it. and by the way would you rather have karen carpenter in your show or barbra streisand?? :)
