If you watch The Last Waltz they discuss this song. This was written after listening to a discussion by Levon Helm's grandfather. As a southerner whose family fought for the Union I understand this song. The war was a hundred and forty five years ago but we have never recovered economically. The main issues were economic not slavery.

P.S. also, upon reflection, i let prejudicial anger get the best of me, and i apologize. there were other political factors that came into play. the south is proud, as well they should be, and that song is an epic song of the south and the south's ancestors. hard to accept change everywhere. but, again, leave the band alone. passionate song for a strong and passionate people.

how do i begin to repond? helm is not from canada; he/they never portrayed otherwise.#1 this song is not representative of their stand on the civil war conflict!!! except for militia gypsies, i thought there were, what... three, maybe who thought this was a way of thinking. this was the band's way of telling many southerners' feelings-- right or wrong-- with passion. great song. lay off the band, man.. and "get your mind right."

Thanks for posting this!!!! Story- when i was in college back in 99. I took American Music as a class. On one of the tests they asked who wrote "the night they drove ole dixie down" I wrote in the band. hahahha I was so wrong. What a classic song even though I am a yankee I give mad respect.

Saying that a musician is Canadian isn't being brash, but simply a proud statement & attempt to separate Canadian culture from the American culture that threatens to overwhelm it. From what you say, it seems that you've no idea how it feels to be thought of as a weaker, less valuable version of your neighbours - something that is only a falsely perpetuated stereotype. How difficult is it for an artist to make their voice be heard & how much more so if they have to deal with that stereotype?
