I don't think you can see magnitude 10 objects with the naked eye. Could have been a planet, or even a satellite. Manmade objects are often visible at dawn and dusk because sunlight reflects off of them.

If an asteroid or comet were headed for earth, I don't think there would be anything we could do about it. We can't get an astronaut team to drill into it, because that's just not practical. We can't bomb it at all, in fact, because all we would achieve by doing that is having a bunch of RADIOACTIVE asteroid pieces fragments still headed for earth. And all of that shit about burning it with a giant magnifying glass or mounting solar panels on it to deflect its course isn't realistic either.

What do you think a large explosion or fireball over a military installation like a ICBM launch complex would cause? The Air Force has been tracking these objects for just the reason that an asteroid impact might be mistaken for a nuclear weapon. Someday we might be able to do something about it assuming we invest in a competent space program.
