No, I did mean it that way. You can make an intricate recipe, you can make great white bread and you can make sliced Wonder Bread. Same for music. Would you smile with a Celine Dion CD? Likewise, some O'Day performances are magnificent and others rely on gimmicks, crowd-pleasers and are less challenging. Not every great singer is great everytime. And you'll note I'm referring to Anita, not Ella. You sound democratic, but undiscriminating.

I will be honest with you. That whole "lowest common denominator" thing is a bit offputting to me. It smacks a little of arrogance. I suspect you didn't even mean it to sound that way. I think Jazz had its origins as music of the people(us common ones), I proudly count myself among them. If everyone on the planet had a copy of the Ella Fitzgerald and Joe Pass Cd's, I would still smile when I heard them. The same holds true for this Anita O'Day video. It is extremely cool.

I think you bring up a good point, that of mass appeal. Four Seasons by Vivaldi is beloved by all and is a fine piece of work, but after a while its omnipresence makes me weary of it. I think the same think can happen with singers where they are marketed to the lowest common denominators. and they do lose some of their specialness or uniqueness. Even O'Day started relying on the same tricks when she got older and her art suffered for it.

I must say that "inoffensive" is very different than saying "offensive". That is what got my back up. It is your right to say, you just happened to have said the opposite. Thank you, I did understand the Starbucks reference. I agree that there is nothing offensive in Ella's singing. I reiterate that her mass appeal doesn't take away from her artistry anymore than Monet's, Louis Armstong's or Beethoven's.

I love Ella. She swings, has great phrasing and sang fantastic tunes that she loved. It is not up to someone else to decide whether one should be "cutting edge". That was her choice to make. The fact that millions of people loved her is not a failing on her part. I heard Coltrane in Starbucks the other day and enjoyed the hell out of it. I love Anita O'Day too by the way

i was there in 1958 and Anita was great...i thought she was the best performance that day. i too wish someone had the entire performance on tape...besides the great singing and interaction with the trio and the crowd....she was by far the sexiest thing around for 1958...her body language alone was enought for me to wish her to continue the rest of the day.... oh...see page 21 in the aug 11th "New Yorker" magazine....

The film cuts in random reaction shots (silent film) that seem to come from early in the set (the restlessness and lack of interest); I've got a rare CD recording of O'Day's entire set, and you can hear that by the end of the first song (her line "Rock & Roll Blues") they were wrapped around her little finger. Bert Stern had filmed the whole set, but only these two songs were used in the film. I'd love to see the whole set...!!

I would guess by the look on the faces of those in the audience that they were expecting maybe Doris Day, or Irene Day, or even Dennis Day. They certainly didn't seem to be into even what the arrangement behind Anita was. There is practically no head bobbing or foot tapping which tells me they were all flat-line! Anita ranks right up there with the 20 or 30 women who could or can really put jazz singing across.

this is one of my favorites from my baby,`Nita...she's the best and she's always surrounded by the best musicians God every created! her rhythm section always hold her down perfectly. i love Greg Phillinganes on piano, Ricky Lawson on drums n Nathan East funkin it up on bass. I totally agree. I too as a child/teen did not like or understand jazz music but as an adult I now appreciate the sound of the instruments, the interpretation of the notes, and just the overall mood and flow of the song. Anita embodies the essense of what Jazz is.

As a big Anita fan(like you) as well as a Toni Braxton fan I do agree with you somewhat... Although Toni has fallen off some and haven't been as good as she did with her first few albums, she still has the same voice. I kinda like the Toni of old to be honest with you. But Anita, she has been consistent with her style and grace, even though she came out with her latest album 10 years later. They both have the same unique low alto/baritone voice, which is a plus for me.

Anita O'Day (1919 - 2006) left this world on November 23, 2006. The Chicago Tribune had a nice obituary on her. In 1941 Gene Krupa hired her as his lead vocalist for $40 a week. She later worked with the Stan Kenton band from 1944-45. An interesting piece of trivia was that she accidentally had her uvula cut off at the age of 7 during a tonsillectomy, making it impossible for her to do vibrato. She said that in order to do a vibrato, she had to shake her head from side to side. R.I.P. Anita.

I've loved Anita O'Day for many years. When Verve records formed and wanted to cut it's first album, they chose Anita over Ella and Sarah. I think she's the greatest jazz singer that ever lived. She performed until she was 85 and could still do Honeysuckle Rose. I wish they had a vid of her singing Peel Me a Grape.

Anita O'Day is just like any normal human being even though she suffers in everyday stresses like we do normally but she did it for us - putting decent songs for us to calm ourselves for rest of our lives. We need people like Anita O'Day, Alma Cogan and Deanna Durbin to continue the music traditions.
