It will be "okay" only if you like it that way. It's not more manly or authentic to drink it without sugar. In fact the historical norm was sugar, and lots of it. Many posters/cards show absinthe spoons loaded with up to 3 sugar tablets bein dissolved into the absinthe.

yeah im moving to prague soon,I was there for a week earlier this month and every souvenir or alcohol shop seemed to have absinthe, or cannabis tea, or cannabis vodka etc. im doing some research on absinthe at the mo because I want to get into it, I get the feeling its just like any other alcohol drink, just much stronger and with sugar?

I recommend anything in the Jade line, of the combier distilleries, anything from Matter-Luginbühl, duplais, brevans, mansinthe, marteau vert, twin tec. The doubs mystique, the roquette 1797, the Belle Amie, the Coquette. thats pretty much the best out there right now, any of those are excellent.

I don't recommend either, especially the Hapsburg, the La Fée is not the best at all but it will louche and will give you a small sample of the true taste, it is however artificially colored, if you want quality absinthe, try the liqueurs de France website.

Where did you get that info from? A movie? If it was truly a hallucinogen, do you honestly think European & American governments would have allowed absinthe to be relegalized? Use your head. And do some research. Thujone is a convulsant, NOT by any means a hallucinogen, and it neither adds or subtracts from the experience of absinthe. And no, convulsants will not make you hallucinate. Sorry, if you want to hallucinate try depriving yourself of oxygen or using LSD. Absinthe would not be for you.

No, it actually does not. Hollywood movies are not exactly the most accurate source of information. They try to fantasize things for dramatic effect. And even if I did buy into all those "old tales", the fact that I drink the stuff regularly gives me first hand knowledge that it doesn't make you hallucinate. Many "old tales" are bullshit. It has no hallucinogenic powers at all. Even if you were able to drink enough of it without OD'ing on alcohol (the great paradox), all it does in large amounts is cause convulsions and/or seizures. These other effects you speak of are the result of the various herbs and high alcohol content combined. The thujone is irrelevant. thujone is not a chemical, it comes from a plant called Wormwood (artemisia ABSINTHium), so it's herbal and YES, it has hallucinogen powers. Only you can not drink enough of it to go insane cause of the high alcohol % But it will give you effects than other alcoholic drinks. And it stimulates the creative mind ;-)

However there is also real absinthe in the U.S. that does indeed contain grand wormwood (it couldn't be called absinthe otherwise). Combier Blanchette & Blanche Traditionelle "Brut d' alambic" are my favorite 2 blanches. The latter is rather strong. It's one of the few I prefer sugar with and I dilute it close to 5:1. If you want to try a traditional La Bleue go with the Clandestine 53 or La Ptite.

Oh yea, I've gone through two bottles of lucid - simply because $60 per bottle is much cheaper than that $120 to $160 per bottle importing from LDF. (which BTW I've gotten every package i've ordered from LDF - I recommend them if you want european (french, swiss or german absinthe)

BTW, I've drank many different absinthes - starting with the Czech Trul 1792, Verte Suisse, Nouvelle-Orleans, Absinthe Edouard, Absinthe Duplais, and most recently the Jade PF 1901.. I've never tried a blanc - I've been tempted to try to clandestine or perhaps another blanc - Any recommendations?

I recommend the Jade Edouard, I think it has the perfect balance of herbs. My second favorite is Absinthe Duplais. I've tried many different absinthes and these two fit my pallette best.

Dude... you're wrong. The lot of US distillers DO indeed use wormwood. It wouldn't be called "absinthe" otherwise because it must contain Artemesia absinthium (Grande Wormwood) to be absinthe. The amounts are indeed detectable by way of Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry, the method used to test samples. The U.S. limit is 10ppm (parts per million). Most European brands fall in that range and could be sold here (many will in a matter of time).

They're experienced spirits tasters but not familiar with absinthe. The absintheurs that are qualified to be judges aren't given the opportunity. I'm not saying Mansinthe is bad. It is a quality made product, but not highly regarded in general. I'd drink it, but I wouldn't pay for it.

The brownish color is common in vintage absinthes that have been colored using an herbal coloring process (as opposed to chemical or none at all). It is called feuille morte (dead leaves).

I'm a fan of the Franky Guy as well, which is another minority opinion it seems. Many seem to not like it. I was upset to see it got taken off of LDF's website. I admit I haven't purchased it in quite some time because there are so many better commercial offerings nowadays but I may have revisited it at some point. Thank you very much for this video. It inspired me to buy a Duplais which made me fall in love with Absinthe just today. This drink is really mystique. It looks as if Jade does decent Absithes. Would you recommend a New Orleans? Seems to be the only available one currently. And of course I would be very open to recommendations how to figure out my favorite taste...

Belle Amie is very good, but it's nothing like Pernod Fils. I don't think Jim meant that he feels the PF1901 is the closet thing to Pernod Fils in terms of quality, just recipe and style. Belle Amie is a Nimes style absinthe and would more closely resemble the C.F. Berger.

For the same reason that when leaves die, they become brown, real traditional absinthe was colored using plants, and the compound found in plants giving them a green color is called chlorophyll, since this absinthe is almost one hundred years old, the chlorophyll has reacted to the small amounts of light it has received and faded from vibrant green to a pleasant brown.

Logan Fils is NOT the same recipe as vintage Pernod Fils The closest to that would be the Jade 1901. Logan Fils has the reputation in the absinthe community as "Logan Filth". Please try another absinthe like the Jade and then tell me what you think of it.

I find it amusing that people on message boards and in commentaries like these can trash Minus The Bear whereas critics like Alternative Press (who would know their music far better than 99% of people commenting on YouTube ever would) consistently give the band rave reviews and endless praise for their music and ingenius songwriting. I know critics don't know everything, but I'd like to think they'd call MTB's bluff if they were "generic" or "average." Minus the Bear are absolutely amazing.

The out of tune you must be talking about is because they are singing it in a different interval like maybe they play a C chord and instead of their vocals reaching the C note they might go and sing at a different interval maybe a minor 3rd or a major 3rd perfect 5th and whatnot. That's what gives it the grungy effect is because Nirvana doesn't sing in the right tune which makes it sound good too.
