juandi2570 1) There are a few things you're not taking into account and can refer to my recent post for them. Yes, I know Phelps won 8 medals, one more than Spitz and whichever one, by a margin, or so I hear. As for Bolt and Lewis, yes Bolt became the first person since Lewis to win the 100m & 200m in the same Olympics, AND Bolt became the ONLY man ever to break the world record in both sprints in the same Olympics....something never done before...contd
By: Angie2106. on 07 Sep 08, 19:48:46
2) Won races by about four body lengths, the biggest margin in any Olympic 200m; something else that has never been done before & if track athletes had as many medal chances as swimming seems to allow, (8 in events in total), then I'm sure he would he would have swept the board, also & I'd class him as best sprinter ever, not best Olympian ever. He sprints, nothing more. Phelps would probably be more modest and truthful & cringe at this kind of assumption. Stop living in dream-land. Get real!

juandi2570 You disagree with what? I know long jump is track & field & know that 400M is harder than 100m & 200m. Bottom line, same applies to track; the longer you go the harder it is. Bolt hasn't much enthusiasm for 400m, (inspite of past success with it) Johnson thinks he could break that record now, but remains to be seen whether he goes for it. Versatile? It's swimming, not the Decathlon. We don't see any one "star of the olympic games" that conclusion is in your bubble, not ours!

jdivergh22 1) You live in the USA, sorry, but we live outside the box, as in, outside of the USA, so patriotic pride, etc, will not cloud my judgment, here, even though I have some family there. On THIS side, there is NO automatic assumption that, Quote: "if someone breaks the world record for most Olympic golds as well as MANY other records broken no matter what sport they are in they are automatically classified as greatest Olympian in the world". He swims and that is all.
By: Angie2106. on 07 Sep 08, 16:59:50
2) As for, "what else are you going to call them", again, he would be rightly classed as the greatest *swimmer of all time. He swims & that is all. Track is the blue ribbon of the Olympics which most people want to see, but I also like gymnastics & swimming, but no time to watch all. The highlights of the Olympics (in regards to the athletes) that were portrayed on our side were the particular achievements & broken records of both Bolt and Phelps; like Bolt rules track & Phelps rules pool.
By: Angie2106. on 07 Sep 08, 16:59:29
3) We don't look any deeper than the reality of it. You are encompassing way too much in such an assumption & forgetting that Phelps is a swimmer, not a Decathlon & Pentathlon Olympian who swept gold all round; then, you may have a valid point. Otherwise, to-date, the only person I know of, who was OFFICALLY granted the title of greatest Olympian of is Jim Thorpe. Phelps is a swimmer, the Olympics is bigger than that! You need to gain some proper perspective, & here are more raw facts:
By: Angie2106. on 07 Sep 08, 16:58:36
4) Of all Olympian sporting events, swimming has the most multiple events, 8 in total AND these 8 events are so similar, (using 4-5 swim styles all intermingled) that winning multiple medals is easier/inevitable if you are a swimmer, such as Phelps. If swimming only allowed 3-4 events, (as OTHER Olympian sports), Phelps would have 3-4 medals & deservingly so. However, my point is there are MORE multiple medal chances for this sport than any other Olympian event; don't know why, but Fact!
By: Angie2106. on 07 Sep 08, 16:58:07
5) So, medal counts were easier to win & I am fair in stating that. Even if Phelps was a native of my country, I would NEVER assume more than the true reality of it. So again, of course I agree he is the greatest Olympian *swimmer* in history, & I don't think ALL Americans look any deeper than that; however, WE have not been fed more than what is true & rightly so, & I don't mean to offend, but to automatically assume anything more simply appears to be, in general, more of an American thing.

Angie2106 if someone breaks the world record for most olympic golds as well as MANY other records broken no matter what sport they are in they are automatically classified as greatest olympian of all time. cuz i mean no offense but what else are you going to call them? Next best olymipian in the world? that wouldnt make sense. so yes michael phelps IS the greatest olympian in the world.
By: jdivergh22. on 07 Sep 08, 09:14:30
awesome michael phelps rocks! i saw this when it was on a few weeks ago but its still cool!
By: dwrayosrfour. on 06 Sep 08, 08:50:34
Yeah good point, Bolt is absololutely amazing but he is no Phelps yet. I do think Bolt could have won more events if he would have entered though.
By: juandi2570. on 05 Sep 08, 16:32:16
I know what a decathlon is. Swimmin' doesn't have that event, what i meant to say was that the 400MI is kinda the decathlon in swimmin' which is the toughest in swimmin' coz it involves the four styles that exists in swimmin'.
By: juandi2570. on 05 Sep 08, 16:30:20
agreed.Both are phenomenal athletes.
By: juandi2570. on 05 Sep 08, 16:25:44
I disagree, the long jump is part of track and field. Michael races the 200MI and 400MI which are two of toughtest races in swimmin' and that shows how versatile as an athlete Phelps could be. If Bolt wants to be the star of the olympic games he's got to be versatile too.
By: juandi2570. on 05 Sep 08, 16:23:41
I feel that Bolt had to win the long jump and the 400 meters to be compared to michael. You're not taking into account that 8 golds in an olympic game had never been done and michael did something nobody had never done before in history. Bolt did the double(100-200) that lewis had done in 1984.

WTF LMAO It's 8 years of training. Whoa, there's that number again
By: Angie2106. on 04 Sep 08, 21:18:46
angelmir18 I agree, what is wrong with so many on YouTube & I have seen racism and bias in comments under the Bolt videos, also. Sometimes I will leave comments in reply to other comments that I think unfair, over-the-top, racist bias, etc, though I haven't the time or desire to deal with the amount you often see. Bolt & Phelps's achievements in this past Olympics have been outstanding, & neither have tested positive for anything, so it is beyond me why some cannot just be happy for them.
By: Angie2106. on 04 Sep 08, 20:55:04
zoltan08 I agree with the 8 sprints/8 gold medals and have basically said the same on other posts. And this has nothing to do with anyone here who is American, I am not that kind of person and some comments/name calling and racism I have seen on other videos are disgraceful and should not be allowed, never known a site that allows it all. Anyway, I'm wondering off the point, here.

First of all, I admire ALL the athletes who have worked hard and clean, whether they came away with a medal or not. Also, the particular achievements of both Bolt and Phelps in this past Olympics, have been outstanding, but I would not go as far as classing Phelps the greatest Olympian of all time & yet we all have our own opinions, too, I know. I could well agree the greatest *swimmer of all time, but I don't think or feel that a *best swimmer is = greatest overall Olympian of all time.
